Outdoor Burning
Recreational fires shall not be allowed within the jurisdiction of King County Fire District #16 unless conducted in accordance with the guidelines set forth below as well as other regulations that maybe enforced by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
Definition. A recreational fire is an outdoor fire which burns materials other than rubbish and yard debris. The fuel being burned must be contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbeque pit and have a total fuel area of 3 feet (914 mm) or less in diameter and 2 feet (610 mm) or less in height. Recreational fires may be for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes.
Prohibited open burning. Recreational fires that will be offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous shall be prohibited. The fire department is authorized to order the extinguishment of any recreational fire which creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation.
Location. Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet (7620 mm) of a structure or combustible material. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet (7620 mm) of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.
Attendance. Recreational fires shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher or other approved on-site fire-extinguishing equipment, such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose or water truck, shall be available for immediate utilization.
